Local Dentists headed overseas to bring smiles – community can help!

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo - Springs Dentistry, a top dental choice for area families for over 25 years, is preparing to bring smiles to patients in South America in March. Staff and volunteers are raising funds to bring skilled dental care to a jungle village in Ecuador facing extreme dental needs.

“Our dentists, hygienists, and assistants are going to provide dental care for hundreds of people in one of the poorest regions in the hemisphere,” said Dr. Abby Nye. “This is the ‘Season of Giving’ and we’re grateful for any donations towards team transportation, lodging and food. Dental care in this area of the world will change lives.”

Long respected for delivering preventative, restorative and cosmetic dental care in the Pikes Peak region, Springs Dentistry is equally respected for social impact efforts that have helped hundreds in the local area.

“Giving-back to our community is a bedrock value at Springs Dentistry,” said Dr. Jessica Duru. “Our social impact in Colorado Springs allowed us to deliver a hand-up to many grateful patients; it has also prepared us to directly help the people of Tena, Ecuador.”

In 2019, the 26-person staff donated nearly $100K in dental procedures and follow-on care including over $70K in care at their annual Freedom Day event Nov. 5 for the military and veteran community and over $17K in care at their annual Smiles for Kids event in April. The team also provides care to members of the hard to serve community throughout the year.

“We’ve wanted to conduct an overseas effort for years,” said Dr. John Lydiatt. “Through our partnership with Rotary International and their Adopt-a-Village program, we’re confident this will be a safe and impactful medical mission. We believe our social impact work and careful planning has prepared the team to make a positive difference for the people of Ecuador.”

Springs Dentistry is sending 3 dentists, 2 dental assistants, 1 hygienist, 1 interpreter, and 5 additional volunteers to assist with oral hygiene education and logistics. Trip cost is $3,700 per person. For more information or to make a donation, visit: springsdentistry.com or call (719) 599-5700.

Jon Sercel

"Jon Sercel is a family member (spouse) of a Springs’ Dentistry employee. Jon and Pat have been married for 40 years and have 2 grown children. Following graduation from the USAF Academy, in Colorado, Jon spent a career in the AF, and later worked both as a defense contractor and as a civil servant, supporting Air Force activities here in the Colorado Springs area. He has volunteered with Pat, in Colorado’s Dental Mission of Mercy events by assisting in the sterilization department doing instrument cleaning and preparation. During Jon’s career in the USAF, he was stationed in many locales around the globe, supporting many US peacekeeping efforts in various parts of the world. He was deployed in regions including the Far East (Japan, Korea), and to many countries in the Middle East and South West Asia Areas. He also lived and worked in Europe, where he supported US efforts in both east and west Europe, the Adriatic and peacekeeping efforts in other areas such as the Caribbean, Panama, and the Balkan Peninsula. He is familiar with operating in foreign locales, and is comfortable in such foreign situations. After retiring from the Government, Jon obtained a CNA certification to be able to support his wife in similar outreach efforts and will use that knowledge to assist the team in this dental outreach. He has previously supported Springs Dental as a sterilization tech, as it has contributed in-state, to Colorado’s Dental Mission Of Mercy outreach efforts. Jon is excited to support this opportunity, and to see another part of this world we live in? That is just icing on the cake!"
